This Eastern-inspired extravaganza has already dazzled Durban earlier in the year, and now it’s gearing up to wow Joburg too. India meets Europe meets Africa in the East Meets West concept, resulting in a stylish blend of fashion, dance and all-round entertainment.
Fashionistas should prepare for an exotic feast of fashion, as exciting young South African designers display how a melting pot of cultures can produce innovative results.
The shows are the brainchild of choreographer Shivani Kara and dancer/performer Bhavnesh Narotam, two KwaZulu-Natal professionals who have set their sights on producing a fashion experience with a difference.
“Bollywood movies are hugely popular in South Africa, and we want to show local audiences that there is far more to this rich culture than meets the eye,” explains Narotam, who heads up the organisation Eastern Moves in partnership with Kara.
Adds Kara: “The fact that borders are blurring across the world means that exciting cross-cultural exchanges of ideas are taking root in all spheres of creativity, including fashion.”Zenobia (model). Designs by Pragasen Govender (Red Envy). Photo by Tyrone Crossman
Audiences will be treated to creations by the cream of up-and-coming local designers, such as Tony Mabaso of Umoya, Sifiso Sabelo, Priya Patel and Amina Hamid of the Memsaab label, who recently participated in her second consecutive Durban Fashion Week.
Expect cutting-edge designs that blend the traditional with the contemporary, the playful with the elegant, and the casual with the luxurious.
In addition to sporting Patel’s intricate mendhi skin decorations, the models will have the benefit of Givenchy’s in-house make-up artist, David White, who will be adorning them in exquisite Eastern colours and textures.
“We’ll be showcasing stunning and funky fashion that appeals to all race and age groups,” promises Kara. “It will be an unusual, high-impact fusing of fashion with different forms of entertainment, including music that ranges from old to new, from Greek to house to Bollywood to South African.”
Brenden Mendez, a Top 32 finalist in the Idols 2007 competition, will be performing.
The premiere night of the East Meets West fashion show takes place at the Kyalami Theatre on the Track on 1 December, with afternoon and evening performances on 2 December. Corporate tables may be booked for the Saturday night show, for which limited tickets are available.
iTalk Cellular will be giving away 10 cellular phones to a lucky table on the premiere night on 1 December. In addition, two iTalk combo hampers are up for grabs at each show on 2 December. One person will be the lucky recipient of a Givenchy hamper, containing a bottle of its new Angels and Demons perfume and other treats, at each show.
Multichoice DSTV will be giving away a PVR and free installation to one lucky guest on the premiere night. Each person who attends the shows will be presented with a gift bag filled with goodies sponsored by PHD in association with Redken, Givenchy and iTalk Cellular.
Tickets are available at Computicket, or e-mail easternmoves@gmail.com for more information to book tables.
