Ladies and gents, start your pets and dolls

The annual Pet and Doll Parade is set to march through Roosevelt Park on Saturday. A red, white and blue theme will mark the parade’s 77th anniversary, a celebration fit to commemorate Longmont as an All-America City.

From 10 a.m. to noon, participants dressed in patriotic costumes will walk around the park with their treasured pets and dolls. This year, 200 to 300 children are expected to join the parade. It’s free, and children don’t have to register.

“Decorate your bikes and wagons and come out and play,” event coordinator Sue Jacobson said.

Last year, pets from many walks of the animal kingdom were represented. Aside from the traditional dogs and cats, some toted goats and birds. One family hauled a three-car wagon train of bunnies, chickens and a pot-bellied pig.

“It’s the longest-running parade and very historic,” Jacobson said. “We had one family who had three generations in the parade last year. It’s just great to have something of this magnitude continue.”

Also offered this year will be free balloon hats and Popsicles. There is no concern about traffic or roads being closed, as the track will be around Roosevelt Park. Animal treats and watering stations will be available.
