Contact lens solution recalled
A contact lens solution linked with a rare eye infection has been recalled in Canada.
Yesterday, California-based Advanced Medical Optics (AMO) “immediately and voluntarily” recalled its Complete All-In-One MoisturePlus solution, which is sold across Canada and the United States.
On Friday, the company received information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that showed a link to a condition caused by acanthamoeba, “a micro-organism commonly found in water, soil, sewage systems, cooling towers, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning systems,” according to a release.
The micro-organism causes acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), a serious corneal infection with symptoms that differ among patients. Symptoms range from redness and sensitivity to light to severe pain and possible vision loss. If left untreated, some patients may even require a corneal transplant.
The CDC interviewed 46 patients in the U.S. who had developed AK since January 2005. Thirty-nine of those patients wore soft contact lenses and 21 of them reported using Complete All-In-One MoisturePlus.
There is no Canadian data yet.
AMO says the recall does not affect any of its other contact lens care products.
Consumers are being told to stop using the solution and to throw it out, along with current contact lenses and storage cases.
